Missionary for September - October
Jennifer Chickering is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church through the US-2 program for young adults. She was commissioned in October, 2009, and is assigned to the Cookson Hills Native American Ministry in Cookson, Oklahoma. Native American Ministries at the Cookson Hills Center serves a Cherokee community with a range of services and opportunities for children, youth, families, and seniors. It includes a cottage industries program and other educational outreach. Jennifer is from Franklin, Massachusetts in the New England Conference, and is a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. She grew as a youth leader in the small congregation. She attended a Roman Catholic middle and senior high school, where she learned to appreciate a range of spiritual perspectives. Service became an integral part of Jennifer's life, which continued into college. She served as a summer intern with the Big Sister Association of Greater Boston in 2008, and did volunteer work with Hope Alive in Sabillasville, Maryland, while attending Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. She earned a degree in sociology from Hood in 2009. Jennifer first considered joining AmeriCorps after college, until her pastor encouraged her to explore the US-2 option. She says, "The US-2 program is the perfect opportunity for me to combine the two things I hold important: faith and service for social justice. I am ready to grow my mustard seed of faith and to help others to do the same."
